What is the timeline for transitioning from Australia to a U.S. high school?
Typically players wrap up their Term 2 studies in Australia before departing for the U.S. in August. This ensures you're settled in time for the start of the school year and basketball season.
Which year IS best for entering the U.S. high school system?
Entering at Year 9 allows for the full high school experience and development. Years 10 and 11 still offer great opportunities, though certain schools prefer a minimum of two academic years.
Year 12 students can transition to U.S. prep schools post-exams in November.
What is the cost of attending a U.S. high school basketball program?
Costs vary, with emerging programs around $30,000 USD, elite programs about $50,000 USD, and top-tier institutions like IMG Academy closer to $80,000 USD per year. Fees typically cover academics, basketball training, and boarding.
Are there scholarship opportunities available?
Yes, most high schools offer full or partial scholarships based on basketball ability. Full scholarships are rare, but partial ones are more common, covering 10-50% of tuition. Visa and flight costs are usually separate.
How can I avoid bad situations when choosing a U.S. high school basketball program?
Be cautious of schools where coaches contact you directly on social media, or schools established within the past year. Always inquire about the conference rules for eligibility, living arrangements, and nutrition to ensure a safe and supportive environment.
What additional advice does HSH have for athletes considering this path?
HSH advises against basing decisions solely on cost, as cheaper programs may lack quality nutrition and accommodation. A supportive environment that promotes growth both academically and athletically is crucial.
CAN I JOIN AN AUSA HOOPS TEAM FOR AAU IF I AM AT A US HIGH SCHOOL?
Absolutely. We often have Aussies at US High Schools link up with our AAU Teams to further their exposure to College Coaches and increase the chance of earning a College Scholarship.
